One of the most life-enhancing experiences days of my life...
It was a privilege to be part of the Taxi Charity for Military Veterans event to mark International Women's Day and to host a conversation with some remarkable women.
Around 100 former and serving servicewomen, including a special delegation from the Netherlands, were taken back to 1944 to hear the recollections of Mildred Schutz - a 19 year old Special Operations Executive in Italy - and Marie Scott, who was a 17 year old switchboard operator during the D-Day landings when she heard the horrors of war first hand.
There was also a moving account of the ongoing recovery and identification of war dead in the Netherlands from Lieutenant Els Schiltmans of the Royal Netherlands Army.
What shone through was the resilience, humility, and compassion of these remarkable women.
The event was expertly organised Christina Bowden of Bowden PR - an amazing woman in her own right.
80 years on, Mildred and Marie's light still shines brightly. How apt that we should hear their stories on International Women's Day.
The last word should go to Marie:
"I would say that the war liberated women. It was the beginning of women's liberation because they realised that they could do complex jobs. So, now you have career women who are in charge of great organisations. The glass ceiling has been broken."
Hear, hear.
